Please answer my questions

1.How many hours of sleep do you get on average per night? How does it match up with the 7 to 8 hours needed per night to cover basal needs and to the 8 to 9 hours needed per night for optimal health?

2.What effects of sleep deprivation have you witnessed amongst your friends, family, and classmates?

Solution

1. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleep less than seven hours per night. In today\'s fast-paced society, six or seven hours of sleep may sound pretty good.

Experts generally recommend seven to nine hours a night for healthy adults. Several sleep studies have found that seven hours is the optimal amount of sleep - not eight, as was long believed - when it comes to certain cognitive and health markers, although many doctors question that conclusion.

Getting the right amount of sleep is important in being alert the next day, and several recent studies have found an association between getting seven hours of sleep and optimal cognitive performance.

Experts say people should be able to figure out their optimal amount of sleep in a trial of three days to a week, ideally while on vacation. Don\'t use an alarm clock. Go to sleep when we get tired. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol and stay off electronic devices a couple of hours before going to bed. During the trial, track our sleep with a diary or a device that records our actual sleep time. If we feel refreshed and awake during the day, we have probably discovered our optimal sleep time.

2. The effects of sleep deprivation which are given as :

(i) Fatigue, lethargy, and lack of motivation

(ii) Moodiness and irritability; increased risk of depression

(iii) Decreased sex drive; relationship problems

(iv) Impaired brain activity; learning, concentration & memory problems
