A thin ring of radius r(0.1 m), center G and mass in (500 g) is gently placed (i.e. with zero velocity) on a conveyor belt moving with a constant speed of v_0 (3 m/s) to the right as shown. The friction between the belt and the ring will cause the ring 10 move to the right as well as rotate and eventually to roll without slip. Determine the velocity of G and the angular velocity of the ting when it rolls without slip.

Solution

angular velocity = 2pie N / 60

gives speed of the ring is 3 m/ s

therefore angular velocity = 2*3.18*3 /60

= 0.318

velocity = angular velocity * radius

= 0.318 * 0.1

= 0.0318 m/s
