The density of stomata on the lower surface of leaves is affected by genetics and the environment. As the concentration of CO2 decreases, stomatal density increases. Stomatal density is inversely proportional to concentration of carbon dioxide and temperature.

When concentration of carbon dioxide is more, stomatal density decreases because with more carbon dioxide it becomes easier for the plant to take it up. When carbon dioxide concentration is less stomatal density increases to take up more carbon dioxide.

Similarly, when temperature is high, stomatal density decreases so that less water is lost to the environment by transpiration and the plant remains hydrated, and vice versa.
