Electric Fields ANALYSIS Each partner will turn in two plots. Give your plot a title and write a paragraph of cxplanation. Making use of equation (6-1), locate and label the place where the field is strongest and the place where it is the weakest A2. The difference in potential applied to your system is 5 volts and each equipotential line is 0.5 V om its neighbor. Use equation (6-1) to calculate a numerical value for the strongest field and the weakest field in units of V/m QUESTIONS: Air becomes conducting when the electric field strength in a region exceeds 3 x 100 V/m If a spark jumps between a charged object and a grounded object when the two objects are 10 cm apart, what is the potential difference between the two objects? If a lightning strike is 4 x 10 m long, what is the potential difference which causes this lightning strike The electric potential in two dimensions near an object, located at the origin, carrying charge Q is given by V 3KO/ x2 y2 where K is a constant. Find the components of a the electric field, Er and Ey, at some general set of coordinates (x,y). What can you say about the magnitude and direction of the field? REPORT GUIDANCE Prepare graphs of the equipotential lines that are clear and legible. To do this, make sure that at least ten points along each equipotential ine is determined. In places where the lines form around complex shapes, you will probably want to record additional points. Make sure to draw field li which are perpendicular to the equipotential lines. Solution

The electric field E due to the potential difference V between two objects seperated by a distance d

                            E = V / d

Given the electric field at which break down occures E = 3 * 10^6 V / m

and seperation between the charges = 10cm

potential difference between charges V = E * d

                                                                = 3 * 10 ^6 V/ m * 0.1 m

                                                                = 3 * 10^5 Volts

simillarly if the lightning strick is of the length d = 4 * 10^3

the potential differnce which cause this strick V = E *d   ; here E is the break down field

                                                                              = 3 * 10 ^6 * 4 * 10^3

                                                                          V = 12 * 10^9 Volts
