A square coil of wire containing a single turn is placed in a uniform 0.23-T magnetic field, as the drawing shows. Each side has a length of 0.25 m, and the current in the coil is 13 A. Determine the magnitude of the magnetic force on (a) the top and (b) left sides.

Solution

Magnetic field B = 0.23 T

Length of each side L = 0.25 m

Current i = 13 A

(a).the magnitude of the magnetic force on the top F = BiL sin 90

        F = Bil             Since sin 90 = 1

           = 0.23 x13 x0.25

           = 0.7475 N

(b) the magnitude of the magnetic force on left sides F \' = Bil sin 0

F \' = 0            Since sin 0 = 0
