In 1999 Adidas and Payless went to court due to the famous stripes of Adidas

Since 1952 Adidas had use the 3 stripe mark as a logo and it was trademarked, payless was selling similar athletic shoes with 2 and 4 stripes which was confusing to consumers, this did not happened only one time, in 2001 Payless again was selling these kind of shoes and the fear of Adidas was that consumers would buy these less expensive shoes thinking they were Adidas but found out later they did not have the same quality and would think twice before buying Adidas again.
