Find the image of straight lines parallel to the coordinate axes for the function For z 0, prove that In

Solution

Remember: Parallel lines have equal slopes.

But the slope of the y-axis is undefined.

However, knowing that the y-axis is vertical would give you the idea that this unknown line is also vertical; that is, the value of y changes even if the value of x does not.

From another perspective, this would mean that no matter what the values of the y-coordinates are, the value of the x-coordinate does not change.

Therefore, the equation of the line that contains the points (2,4) and is parallel to the y-axis is x = 2.

Edit:

This question has elicited too much noise, but don\'t get confused. Trust our answer when we say it\'s x = 2. One answerer called us stupid, but don\'t mind her. We\'re not top contributors in mathematics for nothing.

Just in case you\'re interested, the equation of the line passing through the point (h, k) and is parallel to the x-axis has the equation: y = k.
