Quiestion about the best techniques to use.

An Al alloy containing 0.8%Mg, 0.8%Si, 0.4%Cu, 0.6%Mn, 0.2%Cr, 0.1%Fe. After solid solution heat treatment followed by aging at different temperatures, several phases are present in the alloy, as shown in the micrographs. Discuss what techniques are necessary to characterize these phases. 20 n 0.2 um Aged at 540 oC for 4 hours aged at 400 oC for 15 min

Solution

Since it is clear from your question that you have done mass spectroscopy in order to identify different element present in your Al sample. After heat treatment and aging process different phases are form. In order to determine those phases go for SEM ( scanning electron Microscopy). For better resolution go for Fe- SEM. You can also do XRD analysis for identification of phases. Some times phases are not easily detectable by XRD so remove some material from sample then examine those power under XRD. Take scanning rate as minimum as possible .
