Solution

v = u + a*t ...............(1)

where, v = final velocity

           u = initial velocity

          t = time

At the maximum height, the projectile comes to a halt and after that starts to fall back. So, in 8 seconds Gonzo reaches his maximum height where his velocity is zero.

from equation 1

0 = u - 9.8*8,     where, a=acceleration due to gravity = -9.8 m/s/s, and t = 8 sec.

or, u = 78.4 m/s = initial velocity of Gonzo in vertical direction.
