What color of light corresponds to the lowest amount of light absorbed? If the light is not being absorbed, what is happening to it? Explain the relationship between the color of a substance and the wavelengths of light the substance absorbs. Why do you think green plants are green? What wavelength of light is being reflected or transmitted?

Solution

Lowest absorbance is of Violet color.

When light is not being absirbed then there is either Transmission or reflection.

When white light falls on a surface the wavelength of maximum absorbance is removed by absorption and the remaining wavelength are reflected or transmitted to the eye to determine the color of the substance observed. The closer the color to red greater is the wavelength, closer the color to purple smaller is the wavelength. With the increase or decrease of wavelength color will change.

Green plants are green due to the presence of the substance called Chloroplast which contain chlorophyll which absorbs the deep blue and red light and rest of the sunlight spectrum is reflected making the plant appear green.

Plant pigments absorb light of wavelength 400nm to 700 nm.
