Consider a wind turbine with a 12-m diameter rotor that is installed at a location where the wind blows steadily at an average velocity of 10 m/s. Determine the available power for the windmill. Consider a mechanical efficiency of 35% for the wind turbine and discuss this process in terms of energy.

Solution

>> Mathematically, available power for windmill is :-

P = (1/2)p *v3*A (Ideal Power)

>> Given, p = Density of Air = 1.2 Kg/m3

V = Velocity of Air = 10 m/s

>> A = Area = pi*d2/4

Putting all above,

Ideal Power = 0.5*1.2*1000*pi*100/4 = 47124 W = 47.124 kW

Now, Mechanical Efficiency= Actual Power/Ideal Power = 35% = 0.35

=> Actual Power = 47.124*.35 = 16.4 93 kW ..... ANSWER......
