A purebreeding wildtype daisy is golden in color A breeder d

A pure-breeding wild-type daisy is golden in color. A breeder develops two independent pure-breeding mutant daisy stocks, mutant #1 has white flowers and mutant #2 has pale yellow flowers. A cross of mutant #1 (white flowers) to mutant #2 (yellow flowers) produced 100 plants all with golden flowers. The F1 plants were allowed to self-fertilize and produced 277 F2 plants with the following phenotypes and number of plants.

F2= 157 golden flower plants 71 white flowered plants 49 yellow flowered plants

When the F2 yellow flowered plants were allowed to self-fertilize. yellow and white flowered plants resulted.

A. How many gene(s) determine flower color in daisy? (Explain your answer)

B. Define symbols for this cross, then give the genotypes of the mutant #1 (white color) stock and the mutant #2 (yellow color) stock.

C. Using the symbols defined in part B. explain the results obtain in the F2 offspring of the cross between F1 Times F1 described above.

Solution

A)

The flower color in daisy is determined by 3 genes (Alleles):

1) The gene of the wild-type, pure breeding Golden daisy. The mutant of which results in a pure breeding White and Pale Yellow Flowers. This Golden flower gene also proves to be the dominant allele as all of the F1 generation (100) and the majority of the F2 generation (157) have golden color flowers.

2) The gene of the White daisy flowers. This gene also plays a part in color determination as the pure breeding White daisy are cross bred with the pure breeding Yellow daisy, producing the 100 plants F1 generation, which then self fertilize to produce the F2 generation.

3) The gene of the Yellow daisy flowers. This gene also plays a part in color determination as the pure breeding Yellow daisy are cross bred with the pure breeding White daisy, producing the 100 plants F1 generation, which then self fertilize to produce the F2 generation.
