Salmonella is closely related to Escherichia. However, Salmonella can neither be infected by lambda phage, nor can it be successfully transfected using lambda DNA. Therefore, this organism is neither a susceptible, nor a permissive host to this virus.

Explain the reason for this failure. Please explain in detail.

Solution

The reason for this failure is that Salmonella provides a resistance to antimicrobial peptides which is due to the presence of 4-aminoarabinose that is added to the phosphate group of the lipid A backbone.This is basially defined as a genetically controlled phenotype which causes the failure as it can be easily regulated upto 3000-fold during infection.This means that during the process of it its adaptation ,it leads to chronic colonization of the airway which is present in the cystic fibrosis patients, This makes is non permissive and not susceptible to the host.
