Imagine you do genetic engineering so that a protein has both a mitochondrial localization signal and a nuclear localization signal. Where would be the final destination of the protein? Explain your answer.
Solution
The new protein that will be synthesized will enter the mitochondria and after the targeting is completed the signal for mitochondria is cleaved, after which the protein will be localized for Nucleus. This will be possible because of the presence of both the signals. Since the mitochondrial localization signals are present at the N-terminus and the nucleus localization signals are present anywhere on the protein stretch, so the mitochondrial target signal gets cleaved out after targetted to mitochondria. After which it is localized to the nucleus.
