Sam and roger were selling water bottles to raise
Sam and Roger were selling water bottles to raise money for new football uniforms Sam soId 5 bottles for eve ry 3 bottles Roger sold. Together they sold 160 bottles. How many did each sell?

Solution

Let us say Roger sold 3x bottles (The reason why we considered the number of bottles a multiple of 3 for Roger is because we are give that Sam sells 5 bottles for every 3 bottles Roger sold. I.e. if Roger sold 3+3 = 6 (3*2) bottles, then Sam will sell 5+5 = 10 (5*2) bottles.)

Therefore, the number of bottles sold by Sam would be 5x.

We are given that together they sell 160 bottles, therefore

Bottles sold by Sam + Bottles sold by Roger = 160

5x + 3x =160

8x = 160

x = 20

Number of bottles sold by Roger = 3x = 3*20 = 60

Number of bottles sold by Sam = 5x = 5*20 = 100

Sam and roger were selling water bottles to raise Sam and Roger were selling water bottles to raise money for new football uniforms Sam soId 5 bottles for eve r
