Suppose a new drug is being considered for approval by the food and drug administration. The null hypothesis is that the drug is not effective. If the FDA approve the drug, what type of error, Type I or Type II, could not possibly have been made?

Solution

Null hypothesis: drug is not effective

Alternative hypothesis : drug is effective

If FDA approve the drug then type 2 type of error could not have been made because type 2 is occure only if we accept null hypotheis when alternative is true.

as FDA already approve the drug( i.e. alternative is accepeted, threfore in this case on type 1 error could have been made, and type 2 couldn\'t have been made.
