Question 12

A cell is placed in a solution of pure water. Which of the following statements is true?

Solute molecules from inside the cell will move outside the cell via the process of osmosis.

The solution outside the cell is considered hypertonic.

The cell will tend to shrivel up in size.

The process of osmosis will result in water entering the cell.

The process of osmosis will result in water exiting the cell.

Solution

Okay let me help u explain this ....

since pure water has maximum water potential of 1 and as we know water moves from a region of higher water potential (pure water region ) to region of lower water potential ( water with some solutes in it) .... ans if pure water is outside the inside of cell will always be hypertonic compared to pure water outside .... thus according to osmosis water will move from region of its higher concentration ( ie pure water outside ) to region of lower concentration (ie hyper tonic water content in cell)......

hence the answer would be

The process of osmosis will result in water entering the cell.

Hope it Helps , Should u need further clarification feel free to comment and ask ,,,, I also give classes on chegg so if intrested u can always schedule a class on chegg for further clarification
