Describe a soil classified as SW and a soil classified as CH

Describe a soil classified as SW and a soil classified as CH in the Unified Soil Classification System as you would to a person having no knowledge of soil Classification procedures or equipment.

Solution

A person having no knowledge of soil classification will not understand the term \'Well graded Sand\' or \'Clay with high plasticity\'. But if properties are talked, they it would make more sense.

SW:

1. It has good drainage and kind of pervious.

2. Very good shear strength when compacted.

3. Does not have expansive properties of swelling, and have almost no frost action.

4. Good construction material.

CH

clay with high plasticity is almost impervious, so there is no drainage, and therefore used in the dam cores. It has expansive properties, so moisture variation may result in volume change. Also the shear strength is not good, and frost action may take place with temperature variations. So it is not a good choice as a construction material.
