A group of cognitive psychologists examined the effect of noise on memory. Male and female college students were randomly assigned to memorize a list of words either in a noisy or quiet classroom. Participants were given 10 minutes to memorize a list of 30 words and then were asked to recall as many words as possible. The researchers recorded the total number of words recalled correctly. On a questionnaire, participants were asked to indicate their level of anxiety during the task. The results revealed that participants had better recall in the quiet room and also less anxiety than those in the noisy room.
