Women between the ages of 40 and 44 have only a 37% chance of being able to bear a child. Joan, Janice, and Jennifer are friends, all in the 40 to 44 age grouo, and all are trying to have a child. Assume they are representative of a random of sample of women in this age group.
A. What is the probabaility that Joan will not be able to bear a child?
B. What is the probability that none of the three women will be able to bear a child?
C. What is the probability that at least one of the women will be able to bear a child?
Thanks.
Solution
Probability of a women bearing a child = 37/100
robability of a women will not bear a child = 63/100
Probability of Joan not bearing a child = 3C1 (63/100)(37/100)2 = 0.258(ans)
Probability that none of the 3 will bear a child = 3C3 (0.63)3= 0.2500 (ans)
Probability that at least one of them will be able to bear a child = 1- P(NOne of them will be able to bear a child)
= 1- 0.2500 =0.7500 (ans)
