Explain how cardiac output (CO) is determined.
Solution
Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute. It measures by multiplying heart rate to stroke volume. Therefore, cardiac output is the product of both. For an example if a person has heart rate at 70 beats /min and stroke volume at 70 ml/beat, the cardiac output is
Cardiac output= Heart rate x Stroke volume
=70 x70 = 5400ml/min = 5.4l/min.
