Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs states our behaviour and actions are driven by a ‘hierarchy’ of needs where lower level needs, such as survival, must be satisfied before we are motivated to meet higher level needs, such as ‘feeling connected’ and self-actualisation.

The two-factor theory (also known as Herzberg\'s motivation-hygiene theory and dual-factor theory) states that there are certain factors in the workplace that cause job satisfaction, while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction.

Expectancy theory of motivation proposes an individual will behave or act in a certain way because they aremotivated to select a specific behavior over other behaviors due to what they expect the result of that selected behavior will be.

There are many ways a leader can motivate and inspire his peoples. Manager can apply the simple steps below to help inspire, motivate and influence his team to success.

1. With your team, start to think about the general motivation guidelines and the nine principles of good motivation . Highlight those that are not evident or weak in evidence.

2. Put a plan together, complete with actions and timescales, to include these factors into your team and leadership practices.

3. Now look at the key demotivating factors above, and highlight those that are evident in your team.

4. Add tasks to the action plan, to begin to eliminate these demotivating factors.

5. Now start to think of additional ways you can motivate, inspire and reward members of your team – think of three additional ideas.

6. Add two additional demotivating factors that you can see in your team and add these to the action plan.

7. Now score each factor and associated action in priority order.

8. Tackle the first three highest priority actions first and complete them.

9. Then tackle the next three actions, and so on until the action plan has been completed.

10. Monitor your results. Do the team members feel more engaged and motivated?

11. If not, return to the above steps and go again.

12. If they do, continue to conduct onetoone reviews and maintain your leadership practices, whilst always looking for new ways to keep your team inspired
