Solution

if the operating point is below the charecteristic curve of a pump, that pump can be operated at that point by throttling. the closer the point is to the pump charecteristic curve, the better is the match.

a) for 500 gal/min and 80 ft head, Centrifugal pump at 3500 rpm is good. even axial shall work, but centrifugal curve is closer to operating point.

b) 500 gal/min and 800 ft head, centrifugal won\'t work and rotary is needed.

c) for viscous fluid, centrifugal pump is never recommended. A reciprocating shall be the best option for this application. 9 for 500 gal/min and 80ft)

d) 80 gal/min and 8000 ft head, reciprocating should be used.

e) 80 gal/min and 800 ft, rotary and high speed centrifugal shall work, but rotary is more closer to operating point and hence rotary pump is recommended.

f) 8000 gal/min and 200 ft, centrifugal 1750 is recommended.

g) 8000 gal/min and 60 ft, mixed flow pump or 1750 centrifugal could be used.

h) 8000 gal/min and 12 ft, axial flow pump is recommended.
