Solution

According to the EPA data Ohio river is one of the most polluted river in US. The main problem in Ohio river is Mercury pollution, Nutrient Runoff & High Temperature due to waste water discharge from coal plant.

So GCWW (Greater Cincinnati Water Works) comes to reduce its pollution level, which uses the GAC (Granular activated Carbon) for treatment purpose, which is commonly used to adsorb natural organic compounds, taste and odour compounds & synthetic organic chemicals in water treatment.

So benefits of GAC application at GCWW are as follows-:

1) GAC reduces organic matter, which also reduces DPB level, which is occur do to the reaction of chlorine with organic material.

2) Due to the rduce in organic matter Chlorine use is also reduced.

3) So free chlorine residual is also increased, so distribution system also expand.

4) GAC also reduces the level of pharmaceuticals

5) It also help in reducing the Taste & Odour problem

6) It also help in removing additional solid. As plant passes 11.5ft deep so it also reduced turbidity.

Now GCWW is working to install the UV technology to enhance its disinfection process, which will also lead to the reduction of cost.
