a forty year old diabetic female presents to the outpatient clinic complaining of very fast “spreading of uneven white patches” on her cheeks not associated with any itchiness nor discomfort. The first patch appeared over her right collarbone a year ago and has been progressive. Presently, she can even see traces of skin lightening around her eye area. Her diabetes is controlled by diet and exercise and she has no other complaint.

1. The female is most likely suffering from a skin complication called as vitiligo which causes large areas of di pigmentation or white spots on the back of hands, face, groin etc.

2. It is an auto immune disorder where in the body destroys its own melanocytes, causing skin de pigmentation. It usuallu occurs in type 1 diabetes

3. Treatmet of vitiligo involves the use of steroids or chemical substances called as psoralens, that are directly placed on the skin topically or taken orally.

4. More than 30% of people suffering from such conditions have a family history of the same condition.
