A Spring is compressed until it provides a force of 1 N. It is compressed by 1cm. How much does the mass of the spring increase? If the spring has a mass of 0.01kg, by what fraction is the mass increased?
A Spring is compressed until it provides a force of 1 N. It is compressed by 1cm. How much does the mass of the spring increase? If the spring has a mass of 0.01kg, by what fraction is the mass increased?

Solution

F = kx

1 = k (0.01)

k = 100 N/m

energy given = kx^2 /2 = 100 (0.01^2) / 2

= 0.005 J

now using E = mc^2

0.05 = m(3 x 10^8)^2

m = 5.56 x 10^-20 kg ...........change in mass

fraction = 5.56 x 10^-20 / 0.01 = 5.56 x 10^-18
