Effect of Cocaine Alcohol Prozac and Sugar on Neurotransmitt

Effect of Cocaine, Alcohol, Prozac and Sugar on Neurotransmitters.

Solution

Cocaine - Blocks the reuptake of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. Hence the concentration of these neurotransmitters are increased and provide excess energy, confidence and more dependency.

Alcohol -  It alters the membrane, ion channels, enzymes, and receptors of the neurons. It also binds directly to the receptors for acetylcholine, serotonin, GABA, and the NMDA receptors for glutamate. Upon binding it opens up the ion channels and allows excess of cl- ions and diminishes the neuron activity and provides sedative effects.

Prozac - It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, hence blocks the neurotransmitter serotonin by not allowing it to reuptake.

Sugar - The carbohydrate such as sugar leads to increased production of precursors for neurotransmitters which in turn influences serotonin production in brain. Hence, the person has happy feeling.
