If a human or feline patient were to overdose on codeine, can you think of any treatment options that would help to eliminate the codeine more rapidly? How would renal pH affect elimination? Would glomerular filtration be affected if renal pH is changed?

Solution

The most efficient treatment would be stomach pumping which should be done effective immediately within 30 minutes or so. Since the elimination is through urine, increased fluid intake also increases the rate of elimination. An overdose of codeine can also casue respiratory depression, in which case an antagonist must be used to remove the codeine in the body. A decreased renal pH leads to complete elimination of codeine. A change in renal pH is less likely to change the GFR.
