What are some Delta-Form amino acids found in nature? How are they formed.
Solution
D amino acids are not proteinogenic i.e. they are not involved in protein synthesis. Some D amino acids found in nature are -
D aspartate; D serine - occur in very less concentrations in mammals. D serine act as neuromodulators. While D aspartate has important role in foetus brain development.
D alanine and D glutamate are found in peptidoglycan of cell wall in bacteria. They confer antibiotic resistance to them.
D aminoacids are also found in venomof animals like - platypus and cone snail.
Formation of D amino acids occur by racemisation, epimerisation or by isomerisation.
