Sam likes to play games. Sam plans to challenge you to a game with the following rules:
1. The games has two players: Player #1 and Player #2.
2. On a table will be placed a certain number of chips separated into two piles which are not necessarily the same size. (i.e., poker chips)
3. The two players will alternate turns removing chips from the table under the following rules: a. A player may only remove chips from only one of the two piles each turn. He/she can change the pile he/she selects chips from each turn. b. A player can remove any number of chips from the pile of his/her choosing. c. A player must remove at least 1 chip each turn.
4. Before the game begins, Player #1 gets to select the total number of chips and how many chips will be in each pile. After this has been done Player #2 gets to choose whether to go first or second.
5. The player who removes the last chip(s) from the table is the winner. One of the players can enact a strategy that will allow them to win every time.
Explain which player has the winning strategy and what the winning strategy is.
(Hint: It may be helpful to practice playing this game to get the hang of the rules and to test out different strategies.)
