1. How does temperature influence the metabolic rate of the yeast suspension? How do these results differ from enzyme and temperatue experiment?

2. Why must the comparison of yeast and corn metabolic rates be made using the mass specific values?

3. Does the yeast suspensions or the corn seedlings have a higher metabolic rate? Why?

Solution

Answer:

1) With increase in temperature from 10 deg to 40 deg, the metabolic rate of yeast also increases, after 40 degree, the metabolic activity decreases. Enzymes are also show activity at optimum temperature near to 35 degree, beyond 40 degree, the ezymes activity is low.

2) Mass specific values calculates the energy expenditure per unit, metabolic rate of the corn and yeast can be measured.

3) Corn undergoes aerobic respiration, whereas the yeast undergo anaerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, 36 ATP is liberated during oxidation of one molecule of glucose. In anaerobic respiration, 2 ATP are liberated, so corn has high metabolic activity.
