Hypothalamus is located above the brain stem and below the thalamus, whereas pituitary is connected by infundibulum to the bottom of the hypothalamus.

The major function of the hypothalamus is to maintain the Homeostasis (internal environment). The secretion or inhibition of the hormones is maintained by hypothalamus.

The major function of the pituitary is to release the hormones into blood stream that are stored in the hypothalamus. It has two lobes, named as posterior lobe and anterior lobe. The hormones secreted are different from each lobe.
