The data can be used to get the idea of the population from where we have obtained.

For example data related to a cricket match can give you idea about how the players have played and which team has performed good.

Also one can have data of the varying costs of items and can have an idea about the vartiations of costs.

Data can be continuous or discrete. We get continuous data when you deal with heights or times or wieghts. And we get discrete data when we have scores of matches, or marks obtained in an examination.

The variables associated with the data are mean, median, mode, varaince, range standard devaition, mean deviation, skewness , kurtosis, ...

These variables give us an idea about the whole data without seeing each and every term in the data.

For example if some one says that the mean height of a class is 5 feet, then you get an idea about the height of each individual in the class
