One molecule of dietary glucose can be oxidized through glycolysis and the citric acid cycle to generate a maximum of 38 ATPs. Calculate the percentage (nearest whole) of this energy that is lost when the glucose is stored as glycogen before it is catabolized. Show your work and logic.
Solution
When there is highest amount of glucose and ATP are ther in the body then glucose will be converted to glycogen through glycogenesis. In this process two ATP will be utilised one for phosphorylation of glucose and another for conversion of UDP to UTP .
Glucose + 2 ATP ---> glycogen + 2 ADP +Pi
So out of 38 ATP , 2 ATP will be utilised , in percentage 5.26% of 38 ATP used.
