A producer of synthetic motor oil for automobiles and light

A producer of synthetic motor oil for automobiles and light trucks has made the following statement: \"One quart of Dynolube added to your next oil change will increase fuel mileage by two percent. This one-time additive will improve your fuel mileage over 50,000 miles of driving.\"

a. Assume the company\'s claim is correct. How much money will be saved by adding one quart of Dynolube if gasoline costs $3.34 per gallon and your car averages 20 miles per gallon without the Dynolube?

b. If a quart of Dynolube sells for $20.43, would you use this product in your automobile?

Solution

a. Fuel efficiency of the car = 20 miles / gallon

Gallons required to travel 50,000 miles = 50,000 / 20 = 2500 gallons (before adding Dynolube)

Since Dynolube increases fuel efficiency by 2%, the enhanced fuel efficiency now is 20 x 2% = 0.4 + 20 = 20.4 miles / gallon

Gallons required to travel 50,000 miles with new fuel efficiency = 50,000 / 20.4 = 2,450.98 gallons (after adding Dynolube)

No of gallons saved = 2500 – 2450.98 = 49.02

Money saved by adding Dynolube = 49.02 x $3.34 per gallon = $163.72.

b. If a quart of Dynolube sells for $20.43, I would certainly use this product in my automobile.
