Urinalysis questions?
-Briefly describe how group A beta strep damages glomerulus in AGN.
-Describe the way in which female anatomy predisposes to women to cystitis.
-Describe the male physiologic advantage that provides protection from bladder infections.
Solution
-Acuteglomerulonephritis is characterised by sudden appearance of edema, haematuria, hypertension, proteinuria. It may be due to infection of skin or throat caused by nephritogenic strains of group A-beta hemolytic streptococci. The strep bacterial infection causes tiny blood vessels in the glomerulus to become inflammed. This results in decreasing the ability of the kidney to filter the urine.
-Cystitis means inflammation of bladder. Women have a shorter urethra which decreases the distance bacteria must travel to reach the bladder and also near to anus. Sexual intercourse may result in bacteria pushing into urethra.
-In men, the prostate gland produces secretions that slow bacterial growth. The urinary system is biologically structured to help ward off infection. The ureters and bladder are supposed to prevent urine from backing up towards the kidneys and the flow of urine from the bladder is designed to wash bacteria out of the body.
