Chapter 2 Binary Values and Number Systems,

Read this book Computer Science Illuminated, Sixth Edition by Dale and Lewis, Chapter 2 pages 35-49 and answer the questions. Do not use direct quotes from the text, but make it clear that you have read the text to answer the questions.

1. Why are binary digits used to store information in a computer?

2. Many everyday occurrences can be represented as a binary bit – a door is open or closed, the stove is on or off and the dog is asleep or awake. Could human relationships be represented as a bit? Discuss and give examples.

3. What would you say was Grace Murray Hopper’s major contribution to computing? Why?

Solution

1. Today computer are digital, but older system work on analog that operates on two possible states ON or OFF. This represent that the power is ON or OFF. So current digital system is showing by 1 (ON) or 0 (OFF). So thats why binary digits are used to store information in a computer.

2. Yes, we can also represent the human relationship by binary bit. Suppose a person is married or single then we set a binary bit to zero for Single and one for married.

Suppose if you are saying the relationship has more values such as single, married, complicated and engaged. In this example, we have four values of relationship, so we can take two bit binary number to represnt the relationship such as single-00, married-01, complicated-10 and engaged-11.

3. As per the book, she has find a bug in computer. But actually her contribution to computing is proposal of COMPILER. Because it is hard to generate computer language instruction or machine language by simple english commands. That time people is generating machine code one by one. It is boaring and long procedure, that will wasting the time of computer engineer.
