Problem 2 Drude model of conductivity. Describe briefly how this model explains conduction. List 3 assumptions that are made in the model. (14 points). (a) (5 points) Both metals and semiconductors can be described by the 2/10

Solution

Problem 2:

A)

Valence electrons in the metals wander around the metal which are responsible for conduction.

These are the short range interactions between electrons and the ions or the between electrons. The interactions of these free electrons via collisions.

Three assumptions of drude model are:

1) in between collisions these electrons move in straight line .

2) the mean free time between collisions is independent of electrons position or velocity.

3) the thermal equilibrium is achieved in electrons by collision with lattice. They emerge in random direction after collision with appropriate speed relative to the temperature of the region.
