In recent years increased industrialization in Eastern Europ

In recent years, increased industrialization in Eastern Europe and Asia has caused a rise in harmful acid rain precipitation that affects plant and marine life. A sample of acid rain collected in southeast China has a proton concentration 10,000 times greater than pure water and more than 100,000 times greater than seawater. What is the approximate pH of this sample?

A. 7

B. 3

C. 11

D. 5

Basic 10 14 Oven cleaner 10-13 13 Household bleach 10 Household ammonia 10 Milk of magnesia Baking soda Seawater Human blood Neutral 10-1 7 Pure water Milk Urine Back coffee Tomatoes 10 Wine 10-3 3 Vinegar soft drinks, beer 10 Lemon juice Stomach acid 10-1 1 Acidic

Solution

Since the proton concentration of pure water is about 1.0 × 10-7 M

The proton concentration of given sample is 10,000 times that of pure water, which means that= 1.0 × 10-7 M × 10,000= 1×10-3

Now putting above proton concentration of sample in the following equation we get:

pH = -log[H+]= -log[1×10-3]= 3 log[10]= 3.

Hence, the pH of the given sample is 3

Similarly the pH of the sea water is 8 or its proton concentration is 1×10-8,

And the proton concentration of given sample is 100,000 times than that of sea-water, thus its concentration becomes 1×10-8 × 100,000 = 1×10-8× 105 =10-3

pH = -log[H+]= -log[1×10-3]= 3 log[10]= 3, Hence, the pH of the given sample is 3

In recent years, increased industrialization in Eastern Europe and Asia has caused a rise in harmful acid rain precipitation that affects plant and marine life.
