Solution

During transfusion, it is extremely essential to carry out ABO grouping whihc involves two main procedures, forward grouping and reverse grouping. Forward grouping involves the determination of antigen type on the erythrocytes, which is also called antigen typing, to determine the antigen type present on the surface of the RBC\'s. While the process of reverse grouping involves screening of the serum of the for antibodies (i.e Anti A and Anti B isoagglutinins). ABO discrepancies are reported when the result of these 2 tests ar not in agreement or show some discrepancy. Such discrepancies may arise due to technical errors while perfoming the test. However, several other factors may also contribute to such a result, therefore making it essential to obtain patient history such as age, diagnosis, transfusion history, etc. Transfusion history of a patient is of importance, as multiple transfusion may result in mixed cell population of RBC\'s. For example, this may arise when a patient with B blood group recieves blood from O blood group donor. The result of such a transfusion is mixed cell populations, responsible for mixed field reaction. Therefore, in general it can be said that individuals receiving blood transfusion from non-group identical donors, may give rise to artificially induced chimerism or a mixed population of RBC\'s which in turn may be responsible for the ABO discrepancy.
