The private sector is making a growing contribution to health care in much of the developing world. In an analysis of data from 26 African countries by the World Bank, nearly half of the sick children from the poorest income quintile were found to have made use of private providers. Most (nearly 87%) of India’s health care is now privately funded10 and out-of-pocket payments from patients have been found to represent 40–70% of the gross domestic product spent on medical care in 20 developing countries. Various factors, including the traditional counterbalance between supply and demand, heavily influence the growth of private health care in the developing world and whether physicians choose to practice in the private sector, the public sector or both sectors and to stay in their home country or to emigrate.

Hi,

When people turn to the private sector for Healthcare it could be for many reasons. In these developing countries, many do not live close to a a big city which would make it harder to visit a big Hospital for any needs. A private Doctor would be more convenient for those whom live in small villages, they could be closer and much more inexpensive than a Public Physician.

I can relate to this, in my hometown in Mexico we have a Dentist. He has ran his practice since I can remember my parents visiting him for Dental work in the late 90\'s. He is very cheap and not like most Dentist. He once extracted a tooth on a family member for a small fee of $15. An extraction here could easily add up to $100. It is easy to see why many choose PSP over Public.

Solution

Response to the student’s Post:

It is true that people find it difficult to move to a big city from a smaller city for a health treatment. But, it is more to do with the convenience. Medical practitioner in nearby area can be accessed with ease rather moving to another city for medical treatment.

Also, Hospitals or medical facilities in public sectors are government funded in most of the nations. Thus, they are relatively cheaper than what private sector hospitals are charging for. For example, in a country like India, treatment at AIIMS is cheaper than private hospitals. Thus, People will not differentiate between private and public sector for treatment of small ailments. But, for bigger problems, they move out to other areas for cheap and best treatment. It is the primary cause for the popularity of health tourism.
