You worked in a company that had very little consistency in their communications from all levels. They had a non-existent Human Resources department. Actually their HR was a guy who used to work in an HR department somewhere else but in the company I worked for, he was actually a senior VP and seemed to have little concern for the importance of a true HR department in the company. As a result of that and the communication concern, the employee turn-over rate was very high and the company folded after only a few years. If you were that Senior VP in that situation, what steps would you have taken to make sure a true HR department was instituted? Would you let go of that role and hire someone who could handle it?

The first step as a Senior VP that i would have taken would have been to establish a proper and fully functional HR department. The department would consist of a couple of entry level HR graduates, a couple of experienced HR professionals and a department head. HR or human resource is the most important resource or asset for any firm. They have to treated accordingly.

The second step would have been to ouline policies for the HR right from the time employees are interviewed for a job till the time an employee resigns from the company. Organizations should have policies for all areas like recruitment, incentives, bonus policy, overtime policy. This creates an atmosphere of transparency and builds the confidence of the employees.

Yes, i would let go of the role and hire an experienced HR professional who can lead the HR department. This is the very basic of a functional organizational structure and i will not ignore or rather bypass it.
