In chemical vapour deposition process,the halide compounds such as TiCl4 with hydrogen are passed over the molten metal,for which shock properties need to be improved.Usually the materials are heated upto 750°C,and at this condition the halide gases are passes over.hence the halide compounds react with the surface of the material(mostly metals) and harden the top surface of the material improving the properties by changing the microstructure or chemical properties of the material.

Similarly,the other processes too follow the same principle.But the gases employed to harden the surface to improve the material properties vary.
