When an object of mass 3.00 kg is long vertically from a spring of length 49.0 cm the spring is stretched to a length of 53.5 cm. Find the length of the spring if the 3.00 kg object is removed and replaced with a 4.25 kg object. F = -Kx F = Kx

Solution

The answer is correct, the simple way of doing it is

mg = kx

m1/m2 = x1/x2

m1 = 3.0kg x1 = 53.5-45.0 = 8.5 cm

m2 = 4.25 kg

x2 = 8.5*4.25/3 = 12.04

stretched length = 45.0 +12.04 = 57.04
