What is the difference (in terms of mechanism) between the filters to sample viruses and protozoa in water?
Solution
Filteration is the mechanism used to remove dust, particulate matter and microorganisms from water. The filters used for removal of viruses from water are based on viral adsorption and elution. In this method of filteration, the viruses are concentrated basing on the charge posessed on their nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) and proteins. Limited number of other organisms are filtered and mainly remove the viruses.
ultra filtration method is used to remove organisms larger than viruses. Bacteria and protozoans are removed by ultra filtration. These filters penetrate the organsims and destroy the nucleic acids of the organisms and the debris of dead organisms removed during filtration.
