The pressure exerted by a certain liquid at a given point va

The pressure exerted by a certain liquid at a given point varies directly as the depth of the point beneath the surface of the liquid. The pressure at 50 feet in 26 pounds The pressure at 170 feet is pounds per square inch. (Type an integer or a decimal.)

Solution

let P be the pressure , D be the depth

Given that pressure varies directly with depth

==> P D

==> P = k D

pressure at 50 feet = 26 pounds per square inch

50 feet = 50 (12) = 600 inches       (since 1 feet = 12 inches)

==> 26 = k (600)

==> k = 26/600 = 13/300

==> k = 13/300 pounds per cubic inch

==> P = (13/300) D

D = 170 feet

==> D = 170(12) = 2040 inches

==> P = (13/300)(2040)

==> P = 442/5

==> P = 88.4 pounds per square inch
