You need to prepare blood for a transfusion. You have the following three processed blood packs available:

Pack A- enriched in Red Blood Cells (RBCs) Contents: 2.5 wt% white blood cells (WBCs); 50.0 wt% isotonic fluids; the resr is RBCs.

Pack B- enriched in serum proteins. Contents: 50.0 wt% Serum Proteins; 1.0 wt% WBCs; 18 wt% isotonic fluids; the rest RBCs.

Pack C- contents: 100 wt% isotonic fuilds.

All three packs must be mixed in correction proptions to generate blood for a transfusion pack. The pack needs to have the following composition: 2 wt% WBCs and 12.6 wt% serum proteins.

(a). write out mass conversation equations for RBCs, WBCs, isotonic fuild, seum proteins and total mas.

(b). Calculate the weight percent (wt%) of RBCs and isotonic fluids in the transfusion pack.

(c). What is the ratio of the mass of pure isotonic fluid (pack c) to the mass of pack A? What is the ration of the mass of pack b to the mass of pack A?

Solution

(a)

12.6 wt% serum protein means 12.6 g serum protein should be present in 100 g blood transfusion pack. And 2 g WBC should be present per 100 gm pack.

Pack B is enriched in serum protein so we ll use it to get 12.6 % serum protein.

Serum protein in pack B is 50%.

Weight of pack B having 12.6 g serum protein = 12.6/50 *100= 25.2 gm

But Pack B also contains 1.0% WBC so 25.2 g Pack B contains = 1 *25.2 /100 g or 0.252 g WBC

We need 2% WBC for transfusion pack . that is 2g- 0.252 g = 1.748 g WBC more

Pack A contains 2.5% WBC

Wt of Pack A needed to get 1.748 g WBC = 1.748/2.5*100= 69.92 gm A solution

From C pack we ll take

100- (25.2+69.92)

that is 4.88 gm of pack C to make 100 gm pack.

(b)

Pack A contains 47.5 % RBC

So, In 69.92 gm A solution , lets say x RBCs are there

x *100/47.5 = 69.92

x= 33.21 gm RBCs

Isotonic fluid is 4.88 gm

(c)

C:A=4.88/69.92 =1:14 approx

B:A=25.2/69.92=1:3 approx
