Explain homologous recombination between human X and Y chromosomes.

X and Y chromosomes homology:

The X chromosome is a large sub metacentric chromosome, which contains many genes on it. Among these genes most are unrelated to sex.

The Y chromosome is a small acrocentric chromosome. In this chromosome 83 active genes are present, in which most are related to sex determination and spermatogenesis.

The gene of Y chromosome is a pseudogene. It clearly explains the common evolutionary origin.

Homologous recombination between human x and y chromosomes:

In human X and Y chromosomes several homological sequences of regions are identified.

Generally the chromosomes X and Y are paired during in meiosis and undergo crossing over. these regions are called pseudoautosomal regions., PAR1 and PAR2.

PAR1 crossover is very important in male meiosis. in this chromosomes proper segregation was occur.

where they exchange only DNA within the pseudoautosomal region at the distal short arms of both chromosomes.

However, it has been suggested that aberrant recombination involving other segments of high homology could be responsible for the production of X/Y translocations.
