A tank in the shape of a 1 foot high frustum of a cone has a top radius 3 feet and a base radius 2 feet, is filled with water which weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic feet. How much work is required to pump all the water to a height of 2 feet above the frustum?

Solution

volume of the frustum = (h/3)*(r12 + r22 + r1r2)

given, h = 1ft, r1 = 2ft, r2 = 3ft

put all the values to get vol, V = 5 = 15.71 ft3

density = 62.4 lbm/ft3

mass of water = 62.4*15.71 = 980.2lbm

energy reqd to lift this mass by 1 ft = (mass)*(ht)*g

g=32.7 ft/s2

put all the values, to get work reqd = 32051.8 lbm.ft2/s2

A tank in the shape of a 1 foot high frustum of a cone has a top radius 3 feet and a base radius 2 feet, is filled with water which weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic
