Three data sets are collected and he correlation coefficient

Three data sets are collected, and he correlation coefficient is computed in each case. The variables are

             (i) grade point average in freshman year and sophomore year

(ii) grade point average in freshman year and in senior year

(ii) length and weight of two - by – four boards.

Possible values for the correlation coefficients are: -0.5   0.0   0.30   0.60    0.95.

Match the correlations with the data sets; two will be left over. Explain your choices

Solution

i.) Grade point average in freshman and sophomore year= 0.60

ii.) Grade point average in freshmen and senior year = 0.30

iii.) Length and weight of 2*4 board = 0.95

0 and -0.5 cannot be correlation since none of the datasets would be expected to have negative or no correlation.

Since boards would have lessvariability, therefore 0.95 can be correlation for (iii).

In freshman and sophomore years grade point average would be more than freshmen and senior years grade point average bectof long time span.

Three data sets are collected, and he correlation coefficient is computed in each case. The variables are (i) grade point average in freshman year and sophomore
